It is important to remember that a dictionary does not simply compile words that society considers pleasant, but rather it records those that are actually used. For this reason, the academic dictionary update includes new words, etymologies, meanings, and modifications to existing ones. Below, we will explore some of these updates:
Among the anglicisms, words such as "spoiler," "snorkel," and "groupie" have been incorporated, among others. Japanese-derived terms, such as "umami" and "wasabi," are also included. From Italian, we find "barista"; from French, "tabbouleh"; and from Latin, "serum."
Additionally, terms from the scientific field have been added, such as "aerothermal" and "micellar." As for compound words, expressions like "health center," "mobile unit," "protest vote," and "comfort zone" stand out. In relation to specific terms that represent ways of speaking or language uses within a community or group, we find examples like "dana," referring to meteorological phenomena. This term alludes to the natural phenomenon that caused severe flooding in Spain.
Finally, it is interesting to know that the RAE has a new version of its digital dictionary, which includes improvements to its interface.
